South Carolina Solar Panel Production Modeling
Solar Yield Modeling Ensures Accurate Results
Investing in solar power is a commitment to an investment that locks in
your business's LCOE (Levelized Cost of Energy) for 25 years or more.
A critical component to the decision making process when considering such
an investment is having accurate performance predictions. Fortunately,
there are very accurate tools available to derive this information.
SunPower by South Coast Solar uses the same tools that global banks and
investment gurus like Warren Buffet are using to support their backing
of long-term solar projects. Three things are necessary to make these
predictions accurate to the point of being considered “bankable,”
meaning that the model is accurate enough to guide an investment decision.
SCS accurately predicts PV system energy yields through:
PV system parameters: Different manufacturers' equipment performs differently under different
conditions. In addition to the way a system is constructed, key factors
include module selection, inverter topology and efficiency, conductor
sizing, azimuth, and tilt.
Industry leading modeling platforms: Accurate climate data and system parameters form the basis for an accurate
model. The final piece of the puzzle is software that takes into account
the characteristics of performance that a PV system experiences under
real world conditions.
Accurate climate data: Photovoltaic system production depends on the amount of energy reaching
the solar array measured in watts per square meter (W/m2). A climate model
can accurately predict the available solar energy at a location. The National
Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has compiled this data for sites around
the US into TMY data (Typical Meteorological Year). This data usually
incorporates 30 years of real and extrapolated measurements which can
be incorporated into the production model to simulate a PV system's
performance. Our experience has found this information to be accurate
and that a well-designed system can outperform our models.
Bring these three components together and the performance of a photovoltaic
system can be modeled with a high degree of accuracy. There are several
platforms available that boast varying degrees of sophistication. At SunPower
by South Coast Solar, we focus our modeling on three different platforms
that each provide unique benefits. These models are QuickSolar, PVwatts,
